About us
What is a Biobank?
A biobank is a specialized repository that systematically collects, processes, stores, and manages biological samples such as blood, tissue, or DNA along with associated information, including clinical and demographic data. These materials are obtained from individuals who have provided informed consent, and are used to support biomedical research and advance scientific understanding of health and disease.
The extensive collection of biological samples and associated information housed in biobanks presents vast opportunities for advancing the future of medicine. Leveraging these invaluable resources in biomedical research enables deeper insights into disease mechanisms, the development of innovative strategies for prevention and treatment, and meaningful contributions to drug discovery.

About TMIG Biobank
Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology (TMIG) Biobank is dedicated to promoting healthy aging through the advancement of biomedical research. Its core objectives are to elucidate the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying aging and age-related pathologies, establish evidence-based strategies for aging modulation, and develop early diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic approaches for geriatric diseases.
To this end, TMIG Biobank systematically acquires, processes, and stores a wide range of biological samples such as blood, DNA, and tissue samples from older individuals across diverse clinical and functional health spectra. These biological samples are linked with comprehensive clinical, demographic, and lifestyle data, and are curated within a centralized, ethically governed database infrastructure. Through the integrated utilization of these high-quality resources, TMIG Biobank provides a critical platform for translational research and contributes to addressing the multifaceted challenges of an aging population.
