- Development of diagnostic methods for early, prodromal, and preclinical dementia
We construct a large set of brain image database with longitudinal observation and develop tools to detect fine morphological / functional deviations from estimated normal aging to detect very early change in dementia. We collaborate with Brain Bank group to conduce PET-pathology comparison which enable us to establish clinical significance of PET examinations. We tackle not only Alzheimer's disease, but also non-Alzheimer type dementias such as dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), primary age related tauopathies (PART), and limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE). - Research on amyloid and tau imaging for clinical implementation
Since introducing [C-11]PiB-PET in 2005, we have contributed to the standardization and dissemination of amyloid PET diagnostic technology in Japan through image-pathology correlation studies, various multi-center clinical studies and clinical trials. In 2017, we compiled "The appropriate use guidelines of amyloid PET", which are currently in the fourth edition. With the clinical introduction of anti-amyloid antibody drugs for Alzheimer's disease, amyloid PET has been implemented in clinical practice nationwide. We are currently conducting clinical research to bring tau PET into practical use. - Application of PET techniques for clinical gerontology research and medicine
We apply various PET techniques to gerontology research in understanding normal brain function and its aging, and age-related brain disorders. We also provide selected PET diagnostic methods as advanced medical service of the hospital.
